Working Abroad in the United Kingdom

Have you been struggling to advance in your career at your current location and considered moving abroad to take your skill set and experiment elsewhere where you can get a fresh new start. This is realistic option that many young enthusiastic individuals often pursue and often allow them to quickly climb up that corporate ladder, and sometimes easier then they would have at home.

If you have considered moving abroad for work, then you must ensure that you know what rights you have under your destination country's employment laws. Most often you will need to notify your government office that you are moving to another country for work, and check on work permit / visa rules. Even if you are going abroad as an employee for a company from your own country, you may not have the same employment rights as if you were working at home in your own country . For example, the requirements for your deductions, hours, holidays and benefits can all vary from place to place.

There are many non job related issues that you may also want to consider and investigate before moving abroad. Will your spouse be able to work there and if so what permits / visas are required for them. Do you need to register with an Embassy or Consulate when you arrive and what documentation must you bring with you. Will the salary be enough to live there, did you check out the cost of living, the new salary may be more then adequate for your country but may also not be enough to live in the new country. Will you get paid in your own currency or that of your new country, will you qualify promotion and salary increases. If your job is terminated and you wish to stay in the country you have been working in, what permits would you and your family require to stay living there and what are the chances of finding a new job there?

Lets consider Americans who wish to work in the United Kingdom...

.

Do they require permission to work in the UK?

US citizens will normally always require a work permit or visa in order to qualify for British employment opportunities. These permits are also specific to each employer, therefore a new one is needed for each employer that you plan on working for.

Should you be concerned about tax issues

Just like in our own country, you should always be concerned about taxes, American citizens are subject to US income tax on all of their worldwide income and gains, regardless of where they are currently working. However, there are some things that advantages to living in a different country like the UK. Part of your income can be excluded from your taxable income if it qualifies as a foreign earned income and sometimes your housing costs like renting an apartment can also qualify for what is known as a foreign housing exclusion.

When Americans whom work in the UK covered by the same employment rights?

Not all employment rights are exactly the same, as an American you will have some of your own country's rights combined with a combination of British employment rights. Americans still have the right to claim unfair dismissal even if they are employed in the UK. Anti-discrimination laws will protect Americans while they work abroad. Different levels of work permits / visas will actually vary from one to another so it is best to check with your government office to be sure.

Where can an American find employment opportunities in the United Kingdom?

There are plenty of employment web sites found featuring jobs in the UK, such as the UK job centre and the UK jobs in science & research. Both of these sites offer many jobs opportunities located all over the United Kingdom especially in Academics, such as scientists, professors, lecturers and teachers.
